FIBRE OPTIC CABLE FOR FAST INTERNET
These high Internet speeds of 1 Gbit/s are made possible by our hybrid fibre optic cable network. This consists of pure fibre, with the final section up to the cable socket composed of interference-resistant coaxial cable. And so data travels through the network at lightning speed. You can see exactly how this works in the video:
PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE WITH FIBRE OPTIC CABLE
We want to browse the web, stream, chat and game – all at the same time. With UPC’s fibre optic cable network you can do all of these things without experiencing a loss of performance, since Internet, digital television and telephone are transmitted separately and do not compromise each other when they are used at the same time. In addition, with our network we have the technological advantage that we can increase the Internet capacities to several Gigabits per second if needed – without any construction work being necessary. And so we are ready for future digital trends.
OVERVIEW OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FIBRE OPTIC CABLE OFFER
NETWORK EXPANSION THROUGHOUT SWITZERLAND
With two million connected homes, today we supply around 70% of Swiss homes with Internet, digital television and telephony. We are continuously expanding our presence through various network expansion strategies:
Autostrada
We are expanding
our network
We are pressing ahead with the expansion of our own fibre optic cable network. As part of the “Autostrada” investment programme we are connecting tens of thousands of new homes every year.
PARTNER NETWORKS
Offering products through partners
In certain regions outside our own fibre optic cable network, we work together with local partner companies. Through their network, customers have access to our entire portfolio. The partner companies still deal with the customers directly.
FIBRE OPTIC NETWORKS
We are renting local networks
In certain regions outside our own fibre optic cable network, we work together with local partner companies. Through their network, customers have access to our entire portfolio. The partner companies still deal with the customers directly.
NETWORK ACQUISITIONS
We are purchasing local networks
A further way for us to expand our presence in Switzerland is by purchasing local networks that are offered for sale.
NET NEUTRALITY
The principle of net neutrality states that all data should be treated equally on the Internet. In concrete terms, this principle relates to the last part of the data stream: the transportation of data from the Internet provider’s headquarters to the user, i.e. within an Internet service provider’s network.
UPC is committed to an open Internet. Together with the largest Swiss Internet service providers, UPC has therefore drawn up a Code of Conduct and given a public assurance that content will neither be slowed down nor blocked within UPC’s network, regardless of the provider.
Net neutrality
The capacity of UPC customers’ Internet connections will not be shared with «managed services».
Information about traffic management measures
All data is transported through our network without discrimination.
UPC reserves the right to block unlawful content on the instruction of a Swiss court or a duly authorised authority (e.g. CYCO).
To preserve the integrity and security of our network, we analyse data flow anonymously according to specific attack patterns or anomalies (e.g. DDoS attacks). In the event of an occurrence, we reserve the right to filter such harmful data traffic out of the network.
Our telephone services (VoIP) and Wi-Free are configured as separate data traffic in our network. All data is treated the same, which means the quality of all remaining services is unaffected.
Depending on the subscription of our mobile services, Internet speed will be reduced to a maximum of 128/kbit/s as soon as the high-speed data volume included in the subscription has been used up. Depending on the subscription of our mobile services, this also applies to services whose data use is not counted towards the high-speed data volume included in the respective subscription. This currently applies to Whatsapp messaging within our mobile portfolio. This option is also available to other messaging service providers. Interested providers can contact UPC for further information.
To ensure that all UPC mobile customers can enjoy a smooth and trouble-free video experience, we optimise our video services when a customer surfs the mobile network. A quality adjustment is made to make it possible to watch videos with fewer interruptions, with faster loading times and lower data usage.
All video and streaming platforms are treated equally. Customers who do not wish to benefit from the optimisation can switch it off and/or on again at any time by sending a text message.
Information about network disturbances
Customers can find information about current disturbances and maintenance work via the following link. In addition, there is the possibility of registering for the free SMS or e-mail service to receive information about all faults in your area.
Important information about UPC’s fibreoptic cable network
What is fibre optic cable?
A fibre optic cable network consists of pure fibre, with the final section up to the cable socket composed of interference-resistant coaxial cable.
How fast can I browse the web with fibre optic cable?
- Fibre optic cable offers the fastest Internet with speeds of 1 Gbit/s available everywhere – in the city and in the countryside. In addition, it has the technological advantage that the Internet capacities can be increased to several Gigabits per second if needed – without any construction work being necessary. And so it is ready for future digital trends.
Important information about UPC’s fibre optic cable network
UPC does not build it own fibre optic networks. We rely on our own, future proof fibre optic cable network and are continuously expanding this across geographic regions. So that we can expand our footprint even further, however, we rent sections of existing fibre optic networks in regions that lie outside our own footprint.
Does the Internet speed suffer, the greater the distance that the data has to travel via coaxial cable when a combination of coaxial and fibre optic cable is used?
No, the Internet speed does not depend on the distance of the home from the splitter within our fibre optic cable network. The performance stays the same and we offer Internet speeds of 1 Gbit/s, regardless of the distance from the splitter. The same is not true of DSL providers: via copper cable, the speed suffers, the further away the home is from the splitter.
What maximum speeds (upload and download) are technically possible with a combination of coaxial and fibre optic cable?
Within our fibre optic cable network, we currently offer our customers an Internet speed of 1 Gbit/s for downloads and 100 Mbit/s for uploads. These Internet speeds fully meet our customers’ needs at present.
Should customer requirements change, however, our fibre optic cable infrastructure gives us the technological advantage that we can offer Internet speeds of several Gigabits per second – both symmetrical and asymmetrical.
Important information about UPC’s fibre optic cable network
- Internet speeds of 1 Gbit/s available everywhere – in the
countryside and in the city. - No loss of performance when Internet, TV and phone are used at the
same time - No loss of performance for homes further away from the splitter
- Interference-resistant thanks to external conductor for coaxial
cable (e.g. in bad weather) - Internet speeds of several Gigabits per second are possible
- Future-proof
