Sandro Bernasconi, Managing Director, Hotel Waldhaus am See

In summer 2011 Sandro Bernasconi took over the management of Hotel Waldhaus am See in St. Moritz from his father. The first thing he did was to take the hotel into the digital future of the cable network world. With a 100 Mbit/s bandwidth, the Internet connection from UPC Business is enough for the management and the public WLAN everywhere in the hotel.

Hotel Waldhaus am See in St. Moritz is open all year round – which is unusual in Upper Engadin. As the young hotelier Sandro Bernasconi notes delightedly one autumn weekend, “We have a full house.” He grew up in the hotel – Waldhaus was the family home at the same time. He took over the open-all-year tradition from his father Claudio, who managed the hotel from 1983 to 2011, turning it into one of the top three-star hotels in Switzerland.

He is still on hand to advice his son today. However, it is Sandro Bernasconi, born in 1985, with a degree in business management from the University of St.Gallen, who meanwhile takes all the decisions. Sandro Bernasconi’s first decision was to upgrade and modernise the entertainment offering for guests. He settled on the products for hotels, residences and hospitals specially developed by the hospitality division of UPC Business, Switzerland’s largest cable network provider. First of all, Bernasconi bought new television sets for all the rooms and equipped them with DigiCards from UPC Business.

The 24 HD channels, in particular, are shown to advantage on the new television sets.

A second innovation involved the Internet. In this case, Bernasconi opted for a fiber optics line with a download speed of 100 Mbit/s. “That’s the fastest available in Engadin,” according to Bernasconi. And it only costs 148 Swiss francs a month. The high bandwidth means the entire hotel could be equipped with wireless networks. In justification, the hotelier comments: “Nowadays guests simply expect fast, and most importantly, free Internet access.” It will pay off in the long term. A cautious innovator, Bernasconi is steering the traditional hotel into the future.

Sandro Bernasconi has been manager of Hotel Waldhaus am See in St. Moritz since July 2011. He grew up in the hotel and later studied business management at the University of St.Gallen (HSG).
