Live TV in
– here’s how
Everything you need to know about live
TV and streaming
What is streaming?
Streaming means listening to music or watching video in ‘real time’. These data streams are sent from the server bit by bit and stored temporarily in the browser’s cache. It is the opposite of downloading a file to your computer and watching it later. Streaming platforms such as Netflix are extremely popular and allow viewers to watch films and series whenever they want.
Live streaming means that content, e.g. a live football game, is transmitted to the recipient in real time. Due to the buffering process (temporary storage of content), a live stream always has a short delay of a few seconds, however. Live TV without a delay is therefore not (yet) fully possible. The length of the delay depends on the provider, the Internet connection and the hardware used by the recipient. For live broadcasts without juddering and pauses during loading, the most important requirement is a sufficiently fast Internet connection. Different download speeds/bit rates are required depending on the resolution.
The following table provides the recommended Internet speeds for optimal transmission of the four most common formats.
Internet speed required for smooth streaming
|Standard Definition (SD) 720x576||at least 3 Mbit/s|
|High Definition (HD/HD-Ready) 1280x720||at least 5 Mbit/s|
|Full-HD 1920x1080||at least 10 Mbit/s|
|4K (Ultra HD) 3840x2160||at least 25 Mbit/s|
