Questions about the Swisscom switch from analogue telephony to VoIP

With Internet Protocol telephony (IP telephony), also known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), speech information is transmitted via the Internet. The telephony platform establishes the connection from VoIP to the traditional telephone network.

The switch has already begun and will be implemented gradually until the end of 2017.

All Swisscom customers who still use the analogue fixed telephone network.

All households affected must switch to the new fixed network technology (called IP telephony or VoIP).

With UPC, Phone with IP telephony is already included in the cable connection. This means that you can simply activate Phone and continue making calls. For more flexibility and free calls to all Swiss fixed and mobile networks, we recommend Phone CH. With Phone International, you can also make free phone calls to the fixed networks of 33 countries.

Almost all fixed network devices, such as IP telephones or analogue DECT (corded) telephones, can continue to be used (a RJ11 plug is a prerequisite).

Exceptions include rotary dial telephones, so-called pulse-dialling telephones and ISDN devices, which cannot be used with VoIP (possible with a converter). In these cases, UPC recommends buying a new fixed network device.
