router location

ROUTER LOCATION

step_1

Give your wifi waves room to move without hindrance! Ideally, the router should be slightly elevated, so that it overcomes furniture and other obstacles. The router works best if it is standing freely and is not hidden in a drawer or on a shelf.

POSITIONING THE ROUTER

step_2

The front of your router (where the little lights are) should always be facing into the room. So do not position your router with the front facing the wall or against a piece of furniture. Ideally, the device should also stand on its “feet” – as intended by the manufacturer.

AVOIDING SOURCES OF INTERFERENCE

step_3

The following devices should not be too near it, because they can impair the quality of the wifi network.

° Base station of a cordless telephone

° Baby phone

° Microwave

° Bluetooth devices

° Surveillance cameras

LAN INSTEAD OF WLAN

LAN

You will obtain the fastest and most stable Internet connection if you connect your computer to the router with a network cable (Ethernet) instead of using wifi. This is a good alternative if you use a stationary computer that is positioned close to the router.

ROUTER SETTINGS

FREQUENCY BAND: 2.4 GHZ OR 5 GHZ?

A frequency band refers to a particular frequency range within which signals can be sent. Wifi waves can be transmitted via the two frequency bands 2.4 GHz (GHz = gigahertz) and 5 GHz. These differ in speed and distance. In short, the 2.4 GHz network radiates further but is slower, while the 5 GHz network is faster but does not reach so far. Generally speaking, however, the 5 GHz network is used less and therefore offers a better connection.

Our tip: Try them both to find out which frequency band works better in your home. You can change the frequency range in the configuration menu of the router. Please note that older devices do not support the 5 GHz band.

Good to know: With the Connect Box or the Giga Connect Box, both frequency bands are activated by default. The Boxes select the better frequency automatically.

Extending or amplifying wifi

THE CONNECT APP

Simply download the free Connect App and optimise your wifi with the “Check your home” feature. The app scans the wifi in your home and will either improve the connection or recommend a Wifi Powerline Set.

If you have our Connect Box, you just need to download our Connect App and let it automatically select the best channel.

WIFI BOOSTER

The powerline technology amplifies your Internet signal in every room using existing power circuits – even in out-of-the-way rooms or in the attic. A powerline adapter is placed next to the modem and connected directly to the modem with a LAN cable. A second adapter is put in the desired room, thus creating a new wifi hotspot, which amplifies the range of your wifi. Here’s how to get a Powerline Set: Use the “Check your home” feature in the Connect App. If your reception is not good enough, you can order a Wifi Powerline Set via the app.

Change the wifi password

CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD REGULARLY

For security reasons, you should change your wifi password regularly. We recommend that you change the pre-defined passwords you received with the wifi router immediately after taking delivery of the device. Please remember to change the password in both frequency ranges (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz).

A few tips for a secure password:

  • The password should be at least 20 characters long.
  • Use a random string of letters, numbers, special characters (?!%+ etc.) and upper-and lower-case letters (but not very specific special characters such as ä, é, à, ñ or §).
  • Avoid re-using previous passwords.
  • Please remember to change the password in both frequency ranges (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz).
